No engine failure in Continental crash

Wednesday January 7, 2009

Continental Airlines 737-500 that crashed on takeoff at Denver last month suffered a ruptured fuel tank in the right wing (ATWOnline, Dec. 23, 2008), causing fuel to spill onto the engine, National Transportation Safety Board investigators said, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Lead investigator Bill English said a final report will take at least a year but that investigators "don't have any indication now of an engine failure after a preliminary look." He said, "Evidencewise, we've got everything we want. We just need to put it all together" (ATWOnline, Dec. 24, 2008).

Seven US airlines late last month filed suit in the US Court of Appeals seeking to reverse a new FAA rule requiring pilots to take additional rest following nonstop flights longer than 16 hr. The carriers--American Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, JetBlue Airways, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and Evergreen International Airlines--claimed that FAA "bypassed the rulemaking process" and "deprived stakeholders with expertise on the underlying safety issues the opportunity to participate in a public comment process," according to press reports. Carriers said the rule would result in "substantial burdens " and that "FAA has neither demonstrated how the rule will advance safety. . .nor justified the significant costs." Delta Air Lines did not join the suit and reportedly has its own rest and layover rules with the agency.

US FAA's decision to downgrade Israel's aviation safety standard to Category 2 (ATWOnline, Dec. 22) marked a "black day for Israeli aviation," El Al COO and Acting CEO Lior Yavor said, according to Israeli press reports. "We at El Al expect the Israeli government and the Knesset to take full responsibility for this serious decision, and to immediately and fully share in the costs accruing to Israeli airlines as a result, including the financing of security, which the government promised months ago. El Al expects the government to act with every means to restore Israel's Category 1 rating," he said. El Al and its compatriots are forbidden to establish new services to the US or to add or change aircraft types on currently served routes, and face more frequent inspections while the nation is classified Category 2. The action also cancels codeshare agreements with US carriers, Haaretz reported. El Al codeshares with American Airlines.
