Tuesday June 30, 2009American Society for Testing and Materials approved a new specification that "details the properties and criteria necessary to control the manufacture and quality of alternative fuels for safe use in aviation," US FAA said. The effort was supported by the FAA/industry-sponsored Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative. FAA Acting Assistant Administrator for Policy, Planning and the Environment Nancy LoBue said the step could lead to approval of a number of alternative fuels in the next few years. Thursday June 25, 2009ATWOnline is pleased to announce that a carbon emissions calculator is now available on our Eco-Aviation channel. Calculator is powered by RDC Aviation and enables users to calculate their CO2 by route and by airline for either direct or one-stop flights. RDC notes that fuel burn calculations are specific to each individual airline/aircraft combination and take account of aircraft age, seat capacity and payload.

A feasibility analysis entailing fiber production and testing was conducted that demonstrated "encouraging mechanical and environmental properties," Airbus said. The three students won a €30,000 prize. The second-place team from the National University of Singapore designed a system to use photovoltaic cells to generate electricity aboard aircraft. More than 2,350 students from 82 nations entered the nine-month competition.
