White Papers & Speeches
- How to Reach New Heights of Success
Kaye Shackford - a 30 year aviation veteran and author of the book Charting A Wiser Course: How Aviation Can Address the Human Side of Change - led one of the education sessions at the recent Women in Aviation International Conference. She advised the audience members to achieve multi-dimensional career success by giving themselves permission to do what they love to do and by aligning their own objectives and behaviors with their organization's strategic objectives. And then she showed them how to do so. Air Transport World thinks this message rings true for both men and women in aviation.

Hienonen says Finnair may cut up to one-third of network
Wednesday January 7, 2009Finnair CEO Jukka Hienonen told the dailyIltalehti that he is hoping a 9% reduction in the carrier's route network will allow it to remain stable during the current market downturn but that a worst-case scenario could result in its cutting up to one-third of its approximately 100 routes. Several hundred employees already have been laid off and another 300 will be downgraded to part-time status in the first few months of this year (ATWOnline, Nov. 3, 2008). Finnair plans to take delivery of five A330-200s and two E-190s in 2009 but continues to search for more than €400 million ($550.1 million) in required financing, Hienonen said.
Frontier pilots ratify concessions
Wednesday January 7, 2009Frontier Airlines pilots represented by the Frontier Airline Pilots Assn. ratified a labor agreement Monday that will extend wage and benefit concessions through Dec. 11, 2011 (ATWOnline, May 23, 2008). "This agreement is important because now 100% of our workers have made wage and benefit concessions, a factor that will prove critical in attracting exit financing for our emergence from bankruptcy," Frontier President and CEO Sean Menke said.
No engine failure in Continental crash
Wednesday January 7, 2009Continental Airlines 737-500 that crashed on takeoff at Denver last month suffered a ruptured fuel tank in the right wing (ATWOnline, Dec. 23, 2008), causing fuel to spill onto the engine, National Transportation Safety Board investigators said, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Lead investigator Bill English said a final report will take at least a year but that investigators "don't have any indication now of an engine failure after a preliminary look." He said, "Evidencewise, we've got everything we want. We just need to put it all together" (ATWOnline, Dec. 24, 2008).
Wednesday January 7, 2009Emirates has saved about 10 million liters of fuel and 772 hr. of flight time in the five years since it started working with Airservices Australia to pioneer Flex Tracks. The program involves the use of sophisticated ground and cockpit technology to track live weather and helps pilots chase tailwinds and favorable conditions. It was developed by ASA in December 2003 (ATW, April 2006). The fuel burn reduction has resulted in substantial cuts to emissions, with a total reduction of 26,644 tonnes of CO2 and 163 tonnes of NOx. "Since its launch in 2003, Emirates has progressively expanded the operation of Flex Tracks to all its Australian services and is a major pillar of the airline's efforts to drive eco-efficiencies throughout its global network," EK President Tim Clark said.
Wednesday January 7, 2009Southwest Airlines said it has completed the private placement of $400 million in senior secured notes due to mature on Dec. 15, 2011. They will bear interest at 10.5% per year and are secured by an interest in 17 737-700s.
