US FAA issues emergency AD on 737NGs

US FAA issued an emergency airworthiness directive late Tuesday requiring inspection of all 737NG center wing tank fuel pump autoshutoff wiring systems within 48 hr., warning that "incorrect wiring" could lead to "localized overheating of parts inside the fuel pump [that] could produce an ignition source inside the fuel tank." Southwest bids for ATA Airlines' LaGuardia slots

Southwest Airlines said yesterday that it has submitted a $7.5 million bid to gain the rights to 14 New York LaGuardia slots--seven roundtrips--formerly used by ATA Airlines, which declared bankruptcy and shut down in April. [ more ]

Assn. of European Airlines adopted "The Hague Declaration" at its Presidents' Assembly in The Hague last week, urging national governments and EU institutions to better value the airline industry and not unduly impose restrictions based on environmental concerns. [ more ]

Modifying efficiency: Making older aircraft greener via airframe upgrades

While most of the environmental attention within aviation is focused on aircraft manufacturers building next-generation products and engine-makers developing greener powerplants, aftermarket airframe modifications continue to gain traction as a relatively inexpensive way to increase fuel efficiency and lower carbon dioxide emissions. Aviation Partners Boeing's blended winglets are the pioneering product in this area, and the newest version designed for the 767 is expected to be another success story, but it no longer is alone in the arena. US FAA and Eurocontrol officials recently spoke of how the global economic downturn makes it harder to fund the transition to satellite-based ATC. With airline capacity down and money tight, NextGen and SESAR development...

Can afford to slow down for a while. The congestion problem has lessened with capacity cuts and government money in the US and EU could be better spent on other priorities.
Must move forward as quickly as ever. Traffic will come back and governments need to understand that, even with funds tight, upgrading outdated ATC technology is critical.
Should still move forward, but FAA and Eurocontrol should pool resources to save money and airlines should also be encouraged to make investments in new ATC technology.
